Airport chapels are some of my favorite spaces in the world. I like to think this is an icon of surrender, of laying yourself down before chance and chaos and all the other consorts of a good traveler. You’re about to fling yourself off the surface of the earth, trusting physics and the as-yet-stable jetstream, so it only makes sense to take a moment. The altar here was covered in coins and it occurs to me we’ve always done this – sky or sea, Mazu or Mercury.
